O'Neil was in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She advanced to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. This shocked the judges, and they advised that the public decide for Melissa O'Neil, who was one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the third place ever again. The judge Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win of her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
